Central Link Light Rail Segments 730/740, Sound Transit
The 730/740 segments of Link Light Rail are located in the Rainier Valley area of central Seattle and consist of about 22,900 feet of at-grade light rail track and related facilities. CivilTech provided structural engineering services for over 1,000 feet of retaining walls and three rail stations for the Rainier Valley segment. The Columbia City, Othello and Rainier Beach stations are street-level stations with side or center platforms. CivilTech designed steel station structures, operations buildings, bike shelters, and supports/attachments for artwork. Retaining wall designs included soil nail, rockery, and reinforced concrete cantilever walls along Martin Luther King Way. During the construction phase, CivilTech reviewed submittals, provided site observation, and resolved conflicts in the field. Tasks included observing construction of retaining walls and stations, analyzing structural components to several public art pieces, designing new soldier pile walls during the construction phase to meet field conditions, evaluating and providing additional soil nail reinforcing to alleviate conflicts with a manhole, and reviewing art formwork for soil nail fascias.
